Expo East 2018
This past week, we had the opportunity to attend Natural Products Expo East (“Expo East” for short). Expo East is produced by New Hope Network and takes place at the Baltimore Convention Center. The event gives brands of all sizes the chance to launch innovative products that further missions centered on health, wellness, community building, and sustainability. Similar to the blog from the Fancy Foods Show in July 2018, we noticed a few trends we wanted to share.
Marketing and branding must be on-point
Some of you will think this is common sense but it needs to be said explicitly here. Marketing and branding might be the most important aspect of any company in the food space today. The dichotomy between visitors at booths with strong branding and weak branding really stood out at Expo East. The poorly branded companies were struggling to catch the attention of attendees.
Hemp and CBD products are on their way
This was the first year Hemp and CBD based products were presenting at Expo East and it certainly stood out. Everyone was talking about it. Studies are starting to that CBD may help reduce inflammation and could be efficacious for arthritis and joint pain.
All Natural Sports Performance and All Natural Sleep Supplements
In the post about Fancy Foods, we talked about the explosion of new beverages coming to market and Expo East took that trend a bit further. There are new competitors to Gatorade, Powerade, and Vitamin Water that actually provide electrolytes with much less sugar.
The second part of this story is the entrance of all natural sleep supplements. Most people have tried melatonin or magnesium pills to regulate their sleep cycle after a busy week at the office or after extensive travel. Now, there are a few different products providing all natural drinks and teas to aid sleep. A few of the ingredients include magnesium, l-theanine, GABA, and even CBD.
All Natural Body Care Products
For the past few years, everyone has been rightfully focused on what they eat. As the old saying goes: “You are what you eat”. However, we are more than what we eat, we are what we absorb. It turns out your body will absorb anything you put on your skin. The next wave in personal care will be all-natural. This includes sunscreen, deodorant, pain relief, soap, shampoo, feminine care, and laundry detergent.
